Description

Rising Stem Socket Fire Gate Valve Description

A rising stem socket fire gate valve is a type of fire protection valve used to control the flow of water in fire sprinkler systems. It gets its name from the fact that the stem, which connects the handwheel to the gate, rises up out of the valve bonnet as the valve is opened.

The key components of a rising stem socket fire gate valve include:

• Body – Usually made of cast iron or ductile iron. It contains the flow path and seats for the gate.

• Bonnet – Bolted to the top of the valve body. It contains the stem, stem nut, and packing that prevent leaks around the moving stem.

• Stem – Connects the handwheel to the gate. It rises up through the bonnet as the valve is opened. Usually made of brass or stainless steel.

• Handwheel – Located at the top of the stem. It provides leverage for the user to turn the stem.

• Gate – A circular disc that opens and closes against seats within the valve body to control flow. Often has a rubber coating to provide a tight seal.

• Seats – Located within the valve body. The gate seals against the seats when closed to stop flow. Usually made of brass.

• Sockets – Welded to the end of the valve. Allow it to be turned on and off remotely using a wrench.

Rising stem gate valves open slowly and gradually, allowing precise flow control. The rising stem indicates valve position. They are commonly used for water main isolation and fire protection systems.
