Description
A grooved type butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve featuring a disc-shaped closure element (butterfly) positioned perpendicular to the flow path. Instead of traditional flanges or lugs, it utilizes pre-formed grooves on its body ends for secure and effortless connection with grooved couplings.
Key components:
- Body: Houses the internal mechanism and provides connections to the piping system. Typically made of ductile iron or cast iron for durability and pressure resistance.
- Disc (Butterfly): Rotates within the body to regulate flow. Materials vary depending on the application, like EPDM rubber for water systems or metal for harsher fluids.
- Shaft: Connects the disc to the actuator for rotation control. Can be manual (lever handle) or automated (gearbox or pneumatic actuator).
- Seat: Seals against the disc to prevent leakage, usually made of resilient materials like EPDM or PTFE.
- Grooves: Annular channels machined on the body ends for attachment to grooved couplings.
Working principle:
The grooved butterfly valve uses a circular disc (or vane) to regulate flow through the valve. The disc is located in the center of the valve body and is connected to a valve stem, which passes through the valve neck.
To open the valve, the disc is rotated 90 degrees until the vane is parallel to the direction of flow, presenting minimal resistance to flow. To close the valve, the disc is rotated 90 degrees perpendicular to the flow, blocking the pipe cross section.
The valve disc has a resilient liner material (such as EPDM or NBR) that provides a tight seal when the valve is closed. The upstream pressure forces the disc liner against the body seat to achieve zero leakage.
Rotation of the disc is controlled by the valve actuator, which connects to the stem. This may be a manual handwheel, pneumatic actuator, electric actuator, or automated control system. The actuator rotates the stem to precisely position the disc for the desired flow control.
The grooved ends allow the valve to be easily installed between flanges with grooved end fittings. This provides a fast, convenient installation compared to flanged or threaded end valves. The grooved connection also allows flexibility for valve maintenance and replacement.

Grooved Type Butterfly Valve Features:
• Ease of installation: Grooved butterfly valves are much easier to install than traditional flanged or wafer-type butterfly valves. This is because they do not require welding or bolting, and they can be simply clamped onto the pipe with grooved couplings. This can save time and labor costs during installation.
• Leak-proof sealing: The grooved couplings used with grooved butterfly valves create a very tight seal, which helps to prevent leaks. This is important for applications where leaks could be a safety hazard or cause damage to property.
• Vibration resistance: Grooved butterfly valves are more resistant to vibration than flanged or wafer-type valves. This is because the grooved couplings help to absorb vibration and prevent it from being transmitted to the valve body. This can be important for applications where the valves are subjected to a lot of vibration, such as in power plants or industrial facilities.
• Wide range of applications: Grooved butterfly valves can be used in a wide range of applications, including water, wastewater, irrigation, HVAC, and fire protection systems. They are also a good choice for applications where space is limited, as they are more compact than other types of butterfly valves.
• Cost-effective: Grooved butterfly valves are typically less expensive than flanged or wafer-type valves. This is because they are simpler to manufacture and install.
